What is
Starr Hill Pathways?

The Starr Hill Pathways program is designed to offer Charlottesville area youth, career and college exploration and support them, as rising 7th graders through high school.

Their journey starts with a summer, day program at the University of Virginia where they will engage with many UVA departments as well as youth serving community partners who will introduce them to the world of college and the many career opportunities available to them right here in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Youth who matriculate through SHP will have many options available to them after high school. They will also have both the preparation and self-awareness to confidently make an informed decision about what is next.

What will a
Starr Hill Pathways participant be involved in?

Each selected participant will join a select cohort of rising 7th graders, from the Charlottesville Area, for a three-week day program. Participants will explore the University of Virginia grounds, engage in career-related projects, discussions with faculty and students, and occasionally take field trips to expand on a subject. In addition to college and career exploration, participants will engage in academic enrichment, skill-building workshops, mind and body wellness activities, as well as sports and other fun extracurriculars.

After the summer program, students will continue with Starr Hill Pathways. In addition to career and college exploration, students will also receive academic enrichment, 1:1 mentoring support, and attend skill-building workshops during the school year. SHP is designed to support youth until they exit high school.

Is Starr Hill Pathways for me?

Starr Hill Pathways is a program designed and implemented by a team out of the UVA Equity Center. The Equity Center's Mission is to redress the racial and economic inequities in this university community. To stay aligned with our mission, Starr Hill Pathways, although any rising 7th grader residing in the city or county can apply, we will prioritize BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) youth and students of low and middle incomes.
